Policing to be reviewed in the aftermath of Celtic Park crush

JAMES KELLY MSP said today that there will be a probe into the crush at Celtic Park last month, which left five supporters injured.

Prior to last month’s Old Firm derby between Celtic and Rangers, thousands of supporters were left trapped under the stand at Janefield gate and Mr Kelly said that the review into what happened must “ensure that football fans are treated with proper respect.”

Commenting on the announcement of the football policing review, he said: “It is a welcome development that there will be a review into the recent crush at Celtic Park. The horrific scenes uploaded to social media were terrifying to watch and fans have rightly expressed concern with the way events on that day played out.

“This review must be independent and accountable so that football fans who rely on the police to keep them safe on match days have confidence that it has their interests at heart.

“The focus of this review should be wider than just this crush. In recent weeks we have seen officers aggressively filming individual supporters and even police paying supporters for intelligence on other fans.

“The deputy chief constable is right to highlight that supporters must be at the heart of this inquiry. Strategies in recent years have driven a divide between fans and the police and this review must start to rebuild the trust which has been lost.

“The overall aim must be to ensure that football fans are treated with proper respect, and not as second class citizens.”
