SKEET: Amber Rutter’s joy at becoming Britain’s first female Olympic shooting medallist was topped off by a surprise appearance by her husband and three-month old son.

Ms Rutter, 26, claimed silver in a sudden-death shoot-off after a gripping women’s skeet final in the scorching heat of Chateauroux.

Instead of watching her on TV at home, Ms Rutter’s husband James and baby Tommy made the surprise trip to France.

Ms Rutter said: “I don’t really get too nervous but that was probably more than the wedding day to be honest, a rollercoaster.”

SPRINTING: Britain’s Zharnel Hughes withdrew from last night’s Olympic 200m heats due to a hamstring issue.

Hughes, the world 100m bronze medallist, finished 14th on 10.01 seconds on Sunday night’s 100m semi-final.

Heats for the 4x100m relay begin on Thursday morning, and Hughes could make Friday’s evening’s final should the British quartet qualify.

GYMNASTICS: Simone Biles failed to add another Olympic gold to her Paris medal collection after she suffered a surprise defeat in the women’s floor exercise final.

Biles completed all her tumble sequences, but she twice stepped out of the floor area after landing, resulting in a score of 14.133.

That was good enough for second behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade who scored 14.166, with the US’s Jordan Chiles taking third.
