Leonard welcomes RMT to Glasgow with a call to arms

SOCIALIST MSP Richard Leonard welcomed the RMT AGM to Glasgow today as he warned the Labour government it “cannot build an economy on rearmament and militarisation.”

Speaking of the honour of convening the RMT Scottish Parliamentary Group, he told delegates: “When there is a march, I am on it, when there is a demonstration, I join it, when there is a picket line, I am out in solidarity.

“You either stand with the workers, or you get out of the way, because in my book this is a class-based society.”

Turning to PM Sir Keir Starmer’s military spending binge, he added: “You cannot build an economy on rearmament, militarisation and the nuclear menace, and we will not stand by and allow you to pay the price for this by plunging the most vulnerable members of our class, the long-term sick and disabled and their children, into poverty.

“That is not what we elect a Labour government for. Another world is possible.

“Let’s redouble our efforts in the year ahead in the fight for it. Let’s keep alive that flame of hope, of peace, of socialism.”
