IVF parents must get fertility leave to stop ‘inhumane’ stigma

PARENTS undergoing IVF treatment face “inhumane” workplace discrimination and must have a legal right to paid fertility leave, GMB annual congress agreed today.

Delegates passed a motion that also called for flexible working arrangements during treatment cycles, to help the more than 50,000 Brits who undertake fertility treatment in Britain every year.

Sheffield Council worker Majlinda Perlesi said: “For many, many this is an emotionally and physically demanding journey.

“Despite this there are very few legal protections for those undertaking treatment.

“This is not just unjust — it’s inhumane.”

The motion reads: “We feel that a worker who has been unfortunate enough to have to use costly fertility treatment to be able to have the opportunity to have a child should be supported as a national right when doing so.”

GMB will lobby ministers to introduce fertility rights legislation during this parliament and develop and distribute a model fertility rights policy across the union.
