HEAVY snow has created significant travel disruption across Britain as the cold start to 2025 continues.
Stranded vehicles and collisions have left key roads in northern England closed while rail services have been cancelled and two amber weather warnings put in place.
Several major airports were closed and some have since reopened, but passengers have been warned to expect delays due to conditions.
A new yellow rain warning for southern England has also been issued, where milder temperatures bring a risk of flooding.
The Met Office said some rural communities could be cut off, with up to 40cm of snow on ground above 300m.
National Highways warned that up to 25cm of snow could affect roads in northern England.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged yesterday that withdrawing winter fuel payments from pensioners “might be unpopular” following health service advice to keep homes heated during the weekend’s cold snap.
Pensioners should heat their home to a temperature that is comfortable for them during the winter, with living rooms and bedrooms at least set to 18°C, according to the NHS website.
