Gething's former Welsh Labour leadership rival Miles is back in government

ELUNED MORGAN has reshuffled her top team in Wales and brought back the politician who played a key role in toppling Vaughan Gething, her scandal-plagued predecessor.

Labour’s new First Minister in Wales appointed Jeremy Miles as secretary for health and social care.

Mr Miles was one of four ministers who quit Mr Gething’s cabinet earlier this year, leading to his downfall after less than 140 days in office.

Julie James, who also resigned from Mr Gething’s government, has been made counsel general and minister for delivery.

Mr Gething’s predecessor as first minister, Mark Drakeford, was named secretary for finance and Welsh language.

Previous finance minister Rebecca Evans has moved to the economy, energy and planning portfolio.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Baroness Morgan said: “I need all hands on deck to make sure that we can provide a fresh start.

“My watchword is going to be delivery. That’s what this government is going to be about.”

But she ducked questions as to whether she had offered Mr Gething a role.

She said: “He’s very clear in his decision that he not only wanted to leave the cabinet but also was not going to be standing in the next election.”

Ms Morgan is set to announce her government’s priorities next week. The next elections for the Senedd, expanded to 96 seats, are in 2026.

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “This is the third Welsh government cabinet this year after months of internal Labour Party chaos.

“Wales deserves better than this tired and divided Labour government that delivers nothing but delay and distractions.”
