Firefighters at Aberdeen Airport win pay boost

FIREFIGHTERS at Aberdeen airport have become the latest in the industry to celebrate a pay boost won by their union.

Unite has confirmed that about 30 workers with Falck, which is responsible for fire safety at the airport, will receive a one-off £160 payment, increases in overtime rates, double-time on public holidays, and a 7.75 per cent increase in basic pay and shift allowances.

The deal marks the latest in a series of victories secured for workers at airports across the country as part of Unite’s Runway to Success campaign to take pay, terms and conditions beyond the legal minimum in an industry notorious for depressing wages through outsourcing.

Welcoming members’ backing for the deal, Unite industrial officer Shauna Wright said: “Unite has negotiated another airport wage deal which will make a real difference to the lives of our members.”

The union’s general secretary Sharon Graham added: “Our Runway to Success campaign is accelerating and clocking up win after win all around Scotland.

“The message to all airport workers is clear, if you want better jobs, pay and conditions — join Unite.”
