Enforcement starts on 20mph limit in Wales
20mph speed limit sign, April 21, 2009

ROAD safety enforcers in Wales are stepping up action from tomorrow to enforce the 20mph speed limit.

The GoSafe camera partnership in Wales made up of police, council and government officials will be enforcing the Welsh government’s new 20mph default speed limit in built-up areas in Wales.

The default speed limit was introduced last September 17 as Wales became the first British nation to lower speed limits in residential areas from 30mph.

But the measure has proved controversial as a petition to the Senedd calling on it to abandon the 20mph limit has reached nearly 500,000 signatures.

Ministers have said not all drivers breaking the 20mph limit will be prosecuted, just the most dangerous offenders.

“Following the introduction of the new default 20mph speed limit there was an initial bedding-in period to give people time to adapt to the change,” said a Welsh government spokesperson.

GoSafe roadside teams will use speed-monitoring equipment to catch offending motorists.
