Cuba detains 10 Panamanians planning ‘subversive propaganda’ campaign

CUBA’S government said on Monday that 10 Panamanian citizens have been detained on suspicion of planning a subversive propaganda campaign.

The Interior Ministry said the Panamanians had been paid to enter Cuba “with the purpose of making signs with subversive content, contrary to the constitutional order.”

According to initial statements from those detained, the Panamanians were ordered to leave Cuba “once the objective was achieved” and would receive between $1,000 and $1,500 (£752-£1,100) each on their return.

The ministry said the detainees had acknowledged their responsibility for the alleged activity after being arrested on Saturday in Havana.

Panama’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment.

The arrests took place just days after the Cuban government said a boat filled with 10 heavily armed Cubans from the United States had opened fire on troops in waters just north of the island. Soldiers responded, killing four of the suspects, officials said.

Havana accused those suspects of trying to infiltrate the island and unleash terrorism.

Cuba has said it maintains an open line of communication with the US over the shooting as investigations by both governments continue.
