JEREMY CORBYN had a wise and dignified response to being named the new Beard of the Commons today.
Accepting his gong from the Beard Liberation Front (BLF), the socialist MP told the Morning Star: “This is not my victory.
“This is a victory for the barbers of Islington North.”
The informal network of beard wearers named the independent MP as the new Beard of the Commons after winning his seat for the 11th time on July 4.
The former Labour leader has been voted the Parliamentary Beard of the Year more often than any other MP.
BLF organiser Keith Flett said: “When Jeremy Corbyn was first elected, beards in the Commons were rare indeed and his appearance provoked comment.
“The current House has more hirsute MPs than have sat since the 1920s but Corbyn is without question Beard of the House.”
Mr Corbyn was also narrowly pipped to the title of Father of the House by Tory MP Edward Leigh.
