Welsh farm workers set to strike to win same pay as English colleagues

DOZENS of agricultural feed workers in Carmarthen are set to strike for two days this week in a bid to win the same pay as their colleagues in England.

Members of the GMB Wales union working for the ForFarmers agricultural feed company in Wales are paid 30 per cent less than those across the border.

GMB organiser Peter Hill said: “It can’t be right that our members in Wales undertaking exactly the same job are paid significantly less than their counterparts across regions in England.

“That is unfair, plain and simple.

“The company needs to come back to the table and negotiate with the GMB urgently and get a deal.”

A majority — 85 per cent — of GMB members at ForFarmers voted to take strike action after the company failed to make an offer that would see them put on an equal footing.

GMB members also took strike action on July 3.

ForFarmers sells some nine million tons of animal feed across Europe, employs around 2,500 employees and had a turnover in 2022 of around £2.9 billion at current exchange rates.

The company was asked to comment on the dispute and the GMB claim for equal pay rates.
