Plaid Cymru challenges Sir Keir to support greater powers for Wales ahead of independence march in Swansea
People take part in a march calling for Welsh independence in the centre of Cardiff, Wales, October 1, 2022

PLAID Cymru’s acting leader Llyr Gruffydd has written to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer asking him to support greater powers for Wales ahead of Saturday’s independence march in Swansea.

Mr Gruffydd’s letter said the Labour Party had “historically failed” to keep pace with the growing desire for more powers for Wales.

Plaid’s acting leader called on Sir Keir to back greater powers over the economy, broadcasting, energy, welfare, justice, and transport.

Mr Gruffydd was appointed last weekend after the resignation of Adam Price following the publication of a report into misogyny and sexual harassment within the nationalist party.

He said: “As the debate surrounding Wales’s constitutional future gathers pace, thousands of people will meet in Swansea to show their support for self-determination, many of them members of your party.

“These wishes are clearly being heard by some of your Labour colleagues in Wales who have recently spoken out [over HS2 funding], the devolution of justice and the Crown Estate.

“Over the coming months, all parties will be developing their programme for government ahead of the Westminster election next year.

“By joining Plaid Cymru in pledging to grant the Welsh Parliament greater powers you would be ensuring that our nation has the tools it needs to strengthen its economy and protect its public services.

“My plea to you is to remember Wales.”

Labour responded with a link to former prime minister Gordon Brown’s commission, which reported and made recommendations on the UK’s future in December 2022.

The Brown Commission has been criticised by many in Welsh Labour for its lack of ambition towards Wales.

It recommended the devolution of youth justice and probation services, despite the Welsh government seeking similar powers to Scotland over criminal justice and policing.

But Mr Brown’s report also referred to the Welsh government’s Independent Constitutional Commission and said it expected a Labour government to engage constructively with its recommendations.

Welsh Labour failed to respond to a request for a statement.

Campaign group YesCymru is set to hold a march for independence in Swansea on Saturday, starting at Wind Street at 1pm and finishing at the city’s Waterfront.
