CULTURAL workers from major theatres and arts venues across London will walk out on strike tomorrow as part of the United Nations International Day of Solidarity with Palestine.

The walkout will see workers gather at South Bank and has been organised by an independent group of cultural workers from various institutions and support from groups including The Freedom Theatre, Artists on the Frontline, Stop the War Coalition (StWC), CND and Skin Deep magazine.

Gathering on Theatre Avenue at noon, the workers will be calling on all arts and cultural organisations to end their silence on the war in Palestine and join the calls for an immediate, permanent ceasefire.

In a statement, the organisers said: “We believe that we have a significant responsibility to mobilise creators and audiences when a people’s heritage, culture and future faces imminent threat of destruction.

“An hour of no art or culture is nothing compared to the systematic and historic destruction of arts and culture happening in Gaza, Jenin Refugee Camp, in the West Bank and across Palestine.”

Various other actions are expected to take place across Britain and StWC is calling for a workplace day of action.

StWC said workers could organise a photo op, a lunchtime meeting or protest, a 15-minute walkout or wear green and red and share their action using the hashtag #CeasefireNowDOA.

PCS union is calling on its members to assemble during their lunch break in a protest and vigil opposite Parliament in the capital.

And a social media storm will also take place to mark the day, using the hashtag #GazaGenocide.

Organisers of the national protests for Palestine in Britain have called for the public to attend their local actions this Saturday, December 2, as part of the weekly demonstrations calling for a ceasefire.
