Leonard gets new left SEC members

RICHARD LEONARD’S position as Scottish Labour leader received a boost after two left-wing activists were elected with thumping majorities to the party’s Scottish executive committee (SEC).

Longstanding Jeremy Corbyn loyalists Michael Muir and Enas Magzoub were elected to represent young members on the SEC yesterday.

The Star understands that both won with a two-to-one majority over their nearest rivals.

It is the first time this century that leftwingers have been elected to these positions in Scotland and is expected bolster Mr Leonard inside the party.

Speaking to the Star, Mr Muir said: “We campaigned on a platform which opposed the New Labour policies of war and neoliberalism, and in support of Richard Leonard.

“Whether it is working-class Glasgow women being let down by Labour councillors over equal pay or Labour MSPs who are happy to send their kids to private school or use private healthcare, we’ve too often failed to represent the Scottish working class.

“If we want to win again, we need to change — and fast.”
