Jolyon Maugham reveals sinister side after beating fox to death

ANTI-BREXIT campaigner Jolyon Maugham QC has baffled the country after announcing on Boxing Day that he beat a fox to death with a baseball bat while wearing his wife’s kimono.

The prominent anti-Brexit lawyer posted a tweet on Boxing Day that said: “Already this morning I have killed a fox with a baseball bat. How’s your Boxing Day going?”

Offering further details in subsequent tweets, he added that he was wearing his wife’s “too small green kimono” while he beat the animal to death.

Mr Maugham, whose Good Law Project aims to legally obstruct leaving the European Union, claimed that the chickens in his central London house had been “very distressed” by the fox, which had been trapped inside the protective netting around the chicken pen.

He added that he “wasn’t sure what else to do”, and that he “wanted it out of the way quickly.”

His tweets prompted a huge backlash, and Twitter users alerted the RSPCA, which confirmed that it was investigating Mr Maugham.

Labour MP Charlotte Nichols tweeted: “I am opposed to fox hunting both in its more traditional form on Boxing Day and… whatever this is.”

Mr Maugham later apologised for his tweets.

Ahead of Boxing Day fox-hunting meets, Labour shadow environment minister Luke Pollard urged Prime Minister Boris Johnson to oppose the return of fox hunting, which he called “cruel, unnecessary and unpopular.”

He said: “Labour will use every opportunity to enhance and strengthen the Hunting Act, reviewing penalties to make sure there is an effective deterrent for illegal hunting, and introducing a ‘recklessness’ clause to stop trail-hunts being used to kill foxes.”
