WORKERS at the University of Dundee begin further industrial action on Monday over a management attack on pension rights.

Members of Unite and the University and College Union (UCU), which have staged previous strikes in the dispute, will be joined on picket lines for the first time by colleagues from Unison.

Trade unionists across the university will strike Monday and Tuesday, with selective action continuing in libraries, security and mail distribution for the next fortnight and in finance next week.

Workers said that the proposed new pension scheme had been emphatically rejected and welcomed the strike action by all three unions.

Unison branch secretary Phil Welsh said that management was continuing to insist that any alternative must fit within a “cost and risk envelope.”

He added: “We have not detected any genuine change of heart from the university regarding its proposals, which would slash retirement incomes for our members and leave them bearing all the risks of any investment shortfalls.”

A university spokesman accused the unions of rejecting proposals which met workers’ demands, adding that management remained open to discussions.
