LORRY drivers will protest today over fears that a no-deal Brexit could put them on a “highway to hell” if they are forced to drive for longer.
The “Grim Reaper” will join Unite members demonstrating outside the Department for Transport (DfT) against the possibility that an unplanned departure from the EU could allow the government to weaken or suspend working hours regulations.
Existing regulations limit drivers to working up to 10 hours a day, and a maximum of 56 hours a week.
There are also vital rules about breaks and rest periods.
However, the government has not ruled out suspending these regulations if Britain were to leave the EU without a deal.
Last month, Unite wrote to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps relaying the concerns of workers about the lack of consultation from the government and has yet to receive a response.
Unite national officer Adrian Jones said: “Lorry drivers are becoming increasingly alarmed that a no-deal Brexit will result in driving regulations being suspended or weakened.
“If driving regulations are cut then drivers who are already exhausted will be placed on a highway to hell.
“Forcing drivers to drive for longer and cutting their rest periods is dangerous for the drivers themselves and for all road users.
“The government needs to both start engaging with Unite about its no-deal Brexit planning and also provide reassurance that driving regulations will not be weakened or suspended.”
Unite will protest outside the department in Horseferry Road, London, from 2pm.
The DfT had not responded to requests for comment at the time of going to press.
