Jeremy Corbyn tight-lipped on whether he will stand as independent
Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn

JEREMY CORBYN has remained tight-lipped on whether he would contest his Islington North constituency as an independent, despite Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer declaring he will not be allowed to contest it for the party.

Mr Corbyn tweeted on Wednesday night that Sir Keir’s statement was a “flagrant attack on the democratic rights of Islington North Labour members.” The former party leader has represented the constituency since 1983, being elected as a Labour MP most recently in 2019 with 64.3 per cent of the vote and a majority of 26,188.

He said it should be up to members to select their own candidate and that “any attempt to block my candidacy is a denial of due process, and should be opposed by anybody who believes in the value of democracy.”
