Corbyn to attend Cop26 climate change summit in Glasgow to reiterate case for green new deal

JEREMY CORBYN will travel to Glasgow this November during the Cop26 climate change summit to reiterate the case for a green new deal.

Mr Corbyn’s Peace and Justice Project will host three days of events in Scotland’s largest city, bringing together speakers and cultural figures.

The socialist MP and former Labour leader will use his high profile to ensure that the voices of workers and under-represented groups in Britain and abroad are recognised during the United Nations conference of global leaders, which Glasgow will host from October 31 to November 12.

The Star understands that the core messaging of the three days will focus on the need for a green new deal, which was a key tenet of Mr Corbyn’s policy platform as Labour leader.

The project’s cultural offering will include performers from across Scotland who have been left without work throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Full details are set to be revealed later this week.

Tens of thousands of campaigners are expected to march through London and Glasgow during the summit after the Cop26 Coalition, which brings together a range of groups demanding action on the environmental emergency, unveiled plans today for a global day of action on November 6.

Activists asserted that Covid-19 precautions would be put in place “so we can safely take to the streets and demand real action on climate change.”

As well as the major mobilisations planned for both Glasgow and London, activists will take to the streets in another 15 towns and cities across Britain.

Stuart Graham of the Cop26 Coalition’s Glasgow hub said: “This November, climate activists will stand shoulder to shoulder with trade unionists, community groups, anti-poverty and anti-racist campaigners and the rest of civil society to demand climate justice.”
