Church of England refuses to back same-sex marriage
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND has rejected calls for the clergy to be able to conduct same-sex marriages in a decision described by LGBTQI+ campaigners as “utterly despicable”.

For the first time, however, the church will allow priests to give a blessing to same-sex couples following a civil marriage or partnership.

The proposal, endorsed by bishops this week, will be put to the synod — the church’s governing body — next month.
