Campaign group launches initiative to lobby Lords over trade deal secrecy

CAMPAIGNERS urged people to lobby peers today over a top-secret “toxic trade deal” being negotiated between the British government and the US.

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss was in Washington recently to negotiate a trade deal with President Donald Trump’s administration.

Anti-poverty charity War on Want said that the deal “could be devastating to our NHS, food and climate” and warned that MPs have ended up with “no right to know what is even being discussed.”

The Tories’ Trade Bill has passed through the Commons and will progress to its second reading in the House of Lords on September 8.

The group said that it must be amended to “bring about more transparency, democracy and accountability over the way the UK does its trade deals.”

It has now launched an online campaign to get people writing to peers.

War on Want trade campaigner Leah Sullivan told the Morning Star: “As it stands, the Trade Bill fails to guarantee any measure of trade democracy.

“Parliament will not have any formal role in trade negotiations — it will not have a debate or vote …

“This leaves us with little protection against the enormous risks posed by dodgy trade deals written in the interests of multinational corporations instead of ordinary people.”

The last time the Trade Bill was before Parliament, the House of Lords introduced democratic amendments.

“In this new version of the Trade Bill, MPs have voted to deny their own oversight on trade,” Ms Sullivan warned.

“Public pressure spurred peers to take action before and now we must keep up the pressure to ensure the Lords act on the people’s demands for trade democracy.”
