Another two CLP senior officials suspended over Corbyn solidarity

A FURTHER two senior constituency Labour party (CLP) officials have been suspended after motions were passed calling for the whip to be restored to Jeremy Corbyn.

The action was taken against Hampstead and Kilburn CLP chairman Pete Firmin and vice-chairwoman Bridget Dunne pending an investigation.

Former Labour leader Mr Corbyn had his membership suspended on October 30 for saying that the extent of anti-semitism in the party “was overstated for political reasons by our opponents.”

He was reinstated by a panel of the national executive committee, but current Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer refused to readmit his predecessor to the parliamentary party, leaving him to sit as an independent.

On Thursday, Labour general secretary David Evans said that motions passed in support of Mr Corbyn “will be ruled out of order.” Later that day, Hampstead and Kilburn CLP held a Zoom meeting of about 100 people.

The CLP motion, put forward by Unite Community’s Camden branch, called on Sir Keir to restore the whip to Mr Corbyn “immediately” and demanded the reinstatement of all members who had been suspended for discussing the measures taken against him.

Hampstead and Kilburn Labour MP Tulip Siddiq, who was not in the meeting when the motion was debated, said that she was “angry and saddened” that it had been discussed when it “would obviously cause considerable hurt to the Jewish community.”

The latest suspensions follow that of Louise Regan from her post as chairwoman of Nottingham East CLP on Friday after a motion in solidarity with Mr Corbyn was passed at a meeting the previous day.

A Labour spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures and any appropriate action is taken.”
