Arsenal return to top of Premier League with win at Wolves

Wolves 0-2 Arsenal

at Molineux

A DETERMINED Arsenal side moved back to the top of the Premier League table after a hard-fought victory over Wolves on Saturday evening.

Leandro Trossard’s opener moments before the interval put Mikel Arteta’s side in charge at a raucous Molineux, prior to captain Martin Odegaard’s 90+5 strike sealing a vital triumph.

Speaking after the match, Trossard said: “I just had to handle it so quick so I went with the toe.

“I tried to get it on target and it went in super well. I’m pleased it went in. We really needed it.”

The victory moves the Gunners back to the top of the table by a single point, albeit with an extra game played over second place Manchester City, who beat Chelsea at Wembley to reach the FA Cup final — with fellow title hopefuls Liverpool heading to Fulham on Sunday.

The victory ensured Arsenal have now won 11 of their 13 Premier League games in 2024 and recorded 15 clean sheets from 33 league games this term — at least five more than any other team — including a clean sheet in each of their last six away league games.

The clean sheet also meant it was the club’s most in a single campaign in the competition since 2015-16 (18).

Speaking at the end of a tough week in which Arsenal lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa, and were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich in Germany, a relieved Arteta said: “It was a very good response, so proud of them. We reacted in the right way.

“We deserved to win the game and got another clean sheet again. Obviously disappointed to lose against Bayern, small margins but we have five games to go and we are top again.

“Even at 2-0 you are never sure and they [Wolves] are a good side, they made some changes and caused us some problems.”

Defeat for Gary O’Neill’s side means they have failed to win in their last five league games, their longest winless streak of the campaign.
