VOICE of an Angel Charlotte Church will be taking part in “civil disobedience” and “direct actions” as part of a mass march against austerity, the singer announced yesterday.
The People’s Assembly Against Austerity protest, which is taking place in less than two weeks’ time on June 20, will see support from politicians, trade unionists, campaigners and celebrities. Actors Maxine Peake and Michael Sheen are also expected to be among the crowds on the day.
Speaking at a press conference, the pop star explained that she got involved with the People’s Assembly “because I feel like the public is being misled, is being misinformed.
“I feel like that’s unfair and unacceptable.”Asked whether she would accept a higher tax as a way to solve the financial crisis, Ms Church rebutted: “I would be totally happy if the rate was 60 or 70 per cent.
“I would not move away, I would not have an offshore account. “That would be totally fine, for a better infrastruture and public services, I’d be absolutely fine with that.”
Speaking alongside the singer, Unite the union assistant general secretary Steve Turner said the June 20 protest was “not just about Westminster politics.
“This is a campaign about building community resistance against some of the most vicious ideological attacks on our communities that we are seeing in 100 years. “So this is about resisting evictions, this is about positive direct actions, this is about civil disobedience.”
Announcing the march’s route from the heart of the City of London at Bank to Parliament Square, PAAA national secretary Sam Fairnbairn said: “This government thinks that because they have a small majority in Parliament that that’s a mandate for them for dictatorial rule over the next five years without opposition.
“The point of this demonstration is to kickstart an opposition to austerity and to what this government is planning on doing.”
The campaign will call for another national day of action on the July 8 at Chancellor George Osborne’s new emergency bBudget announcement.
