POP star Paloma Faith stood up against privatisation with hundreds of campaigners today in a bid to save the NHS from further butchering at the Tories’ hands.
Actors Ricky Tomlinson and Stephen Mangan were also among the celebrities supporting the People’s Convention for the NHS taking place this weekend.
The event heard speeches and contributions from journalist Owen Jones, TUC assistant general secretary Paul Nowak and Keep our NHS Public chair Professor Sue Richards.
Prof Richards said: “The NHS is the gift our grandparents gave to us, most of us are determined that it will still be there for our grandchildren.”
The convention will be pushing the five key demands adopted by the People’s Vote for the NHS last year, including the promise to repeal the Health & Social Care Act 2012 and the ending of PFI contracts.
Journalist Owen Jones echoed the sentiment saying: “Bevan gave us probably the most precious gift this country has ever had.
“It’s not so much a case of the country deserving an NHS only when we are wealthy — but how a healthy population can help us succeed as a nation — as we saw after WWII.”
Mr Jones added that “we now stand at a pivotal moment.
“With the general election just around the corner, voters really need to think about the future of our NHS when they select their MP.”
