London rally for ‘game-changer’ Greece election

LABOUR MP Jeremy Corbyn labelled Syiza’s Greek election victory a “game-changer” yesterday as thousands rallied across Europe in support of their anti-austerity plans.

He was among a number of MPs and trade unionists who joined in a show of solidarity with Greece’s new left-wing government after it came under severe attack from the European Central Bank and the European Commission last week.

London’s Trafalgar Square was the scene of passionate speeches including Labour firebrand Mr Corbyn and journalist Owen Jones.

Heralding Greek resistance to austerity, Mr Corbyn said: “The election result in Greece is a game-changer for the whole of Europe.”

Mr Jones echoed the sentiment telling a cheering crowd that “the people of Greece are not just fighting for themselves, they are fighting for you.”

The demonstration was called by the Greece Solidarity Campaign and Syriza’s London members, but was also attended by some trade unionists and various campaigns and left-wing groups.

Also speaking at the rally, young Greek activist Christos Giovanopoulos from the medical support network Solidarity For All said: “We understand that whatever happens in Greece depends not only on the Greek people, if we want to be successful we have to build an international movement.

“We have to bring the insurgency and the overthrow of the system everywhere.

“We should do altogether whatever it takes in order to give, to spread, the contamination of the revolt everywhere.”
