GERMANY: Four people were killed in shootings in northern Germany, police and prosecutors said today.

The victims, including a child, were shot overnight at locations in the rural Scheessel and Bothel areas, near Hannover and Bremen.

The suspect, a German soldier, turned himself in to police shortly after the shooting. His motive is unknown.

SOMALIA: A military court in Somalia sentenced six Islamic State fighters to death today.

The men, all from Morocco, will be executed by a firing squad if their appeal against the sentence is unsuccessful.

It is the first time authorities in the Puntland region have charged or sentenced foreigners for joining IS.

NEW ZEALAND: A court ordered NZ$10 million (£4.8m) in compensation to be paid to the victims of the White Island volcano disaster where 22 people died.

In December 2019, 47 people were touring the volcano when it erupted, killing nearly half of the group and gravely injuring everyone else.

The firms which owned the island and operated tours were found guilty last year of negligence and health and safety breaches.

RUSSIA: Thousands of people today attended the funeral of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny after his death two weeks ago in an Arctic penal colony.

Mr Navalny was buried at a cemetery in the south-eastern outskirts of Moscow after a short Russian Orthodox ceremony.
