6.7 million Brits face financial difficulties

DEBT JUSTICE has called on political parties to address the debt crisis in their manifestos after it revealed that 6.7 million people across Britain are struggling with their finances.

A poll published today by the charity found that 13 per cent of people have missed three or more credit or bill payments over the past six months.

Some 69 per cent said that protections should be in place against harassment from creditors and bailiffs, and 77 per cent agreed that the government should ensure everyone can meet essential costs such as food, energy and housing, without being pushed into debt.

More than eight in 10 agreed that the government should ensure everyone pushed into unmanageable debt can access fair debt solutions. Almost half said it would make them more likely to support a party committed to this policy.

Debt Justice senior policy officer Joe Cox said: “The household debt crisis is becoming ever more entrenched, and polling shows there is strong public support to address it.

“We need to see policies in party manifestos that can match the scale of the UK’s household debt emergency.”
