UNITED STATES: Former Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction has been overturned by the Court of Appeals in New York state.
The court found on Thursday that the trial judge had unfairly allowed testimony against Mr Weinstein based on allegations that weren’t part of the case.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office said it intended to retry Mr Weinstein, who will remain in prison because he was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape.
UNITED STATES: A former Arkansas mortuary worker pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges that she sold 24 boxes of stolen body parts from medical school cadavers to a Pennsylvania man for nearly $11,000 (£8,800).
Candace Chapman Scott was among several people charged recently in what prosecutors have called a nationwide scheme to steal and sell human body parts from an Arkansas mortuary and Harvard Medical School.
She was accused of setting up the transactions with Pennsylvania man Jeremy Pauley, who she met through a Facebook group on “oddities.”
SOUTH KOREA: Police said today that they had searched the office of Lim Hyun Taek, the incoming leader of the doctors’ union, and confiscated his mobile phone.
Mr Lim, who is due to take over at head of the Korean Medical Association next week, has been accused of inciting protracted strike action by thousands of junior doctors.
He branded the raid politically motivated and questioned whether the government was sincere about its offer for dialogue to end the strikes.
VIETNAM: The head of the parliament has quit, according to state media, making him the latest senior member of government to leave office amid an ongoing anti-corruption campaign.
National Assembly Speaker Vuong Dinh Hue’s resignation follows that of President Vo Van Thuong, who stepped down in March — just over a year after previous president Nguyen Xuan Phuc quit to take political responsibility for corruption scandals during the coronavirus pandemic.
