FEEBLE broadcast regulator Ofcom finally threatened to get tough with renegade right-wing TV station GB News today.
The channel, which often features right-wing Tory politicians interviewing each other, went too far with a question-time style show starring Rishi Sunak in February.
The regulator has previously found GB News in breach of political broadcasting balance rules on numerous occasions but has always failed to impose sanctions, doubtless because of its influence in government circles.
However, it declared that the Sunak show gave the Prime Minister “a mostly uncontested platform to promote the policies and performance of his government in a period preceding a UK general election” without countervailing balance.
Ofcom accused the right’s favourite TV station of “a serious and repeated breach” of the rules, as a result of which it was “now starting the process for consideration of a statutory sanction against GB News.”
The broadcaster hit back, claiming that the regulator’s ruling “strikes at the heart of democracy.”
