Jobcentre security guards take strike action over pay

OVER 1,000 jobcentre security guards who work for private contractor G4S are going on strike today in a dispute over pay.

Members of GMB will walk out for 24 hours, in what will be the fourth time that they’ve been forced to take industrial action.

GMB national officer Eamon O’Hearn said: “These workers do a very dangerous, difficult job.

“Ninety per cent of these security guards earn just the minimum wage and can barely keep a roof over their heads.

“It’s shameful; G4S must do the decent thing and make these workers an offer they can live on.”

According to the union, G4S has been handed £211 million by the Department for Work and Pensions since December 2022.

A G4S spokesperson said: “We’re disappointed that the GMB has refused to take our improved pay offer to [its] members.

“We are continuing to try to reach an amicable agreement, and have implemented contingency plans to minimise disruption to our customer.”
