SRI LANKA: Schools were closed today as heavy rain triggered floods and mudslides, leaving at least 10 people dead and six others missing.
Heavy downpours have wreaked havoc in many parts of the country since Sunday.
PAKISTAN: Gunmen fatally shot a police officer assigned to protect polio workers in Pakistan’s north-west, an official said today.
The gunmen fired at a team working in the Wargari area of Lakki Marwat district, said police official Sajid Khan. One of the attackers also died, while the remaining assailants fled.
No-one immediately claimed responsibility for the assault.
ROMANIA: A foreign citizen was detained in the capital Bucharest today after allegedly attacking the entrance of the Israeli embassy with a Molotov cocktail, causing a small fire but no casualties.
A man was apprehended by anti-terrorism officers from the Romanian Intelligence Service before police arrived at the scene, police said.
Local media reported the suspect to be a Syrian national.
GERMANY: The death toll in floods across a large part of the country’s south rose to four today as three bodies were recovered from inundated basements.
The body of a woman whom rescuers had been looking for since Sunday morning was found in the Bavarian town of Schrobenhausen, police told German news agency DPA.
Later in the day, police said the bodies of a man and a woman had been discovered in Schorndorf, near Stuttgart.
On Sunday, a firefighter was found dead in Pfaffenhofen, near Schrobenhausen, after an inflatable boat that he and colleagues were using capsized.
