Mogadishu blast kills 231
Government officials expect that number to rise

A CAR BOMB in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu killed 231 people and injured 275 more in what was the country’s deadliest single attack on Saturday.

A van loaded with explosives was detonated in a busy street near government ministries. Anonymous government officials said yesterday that they expect the death toll to climb higher.

Doctors struggled to assist horrifically wounded victims, many burnt beyond recognition. The Aamin ambulance service said that its paramedics had never seen anything like it in 10 years of working in the city.
