WELSH nationalists slammed Labour’s manifesto plans today as a snub against the country. 

Plaid Cymru’s Westminster leader Liz Saville Roberts said: “The people of Wales are getting increasingly tired of Labour’s lack of ambition for our nation.

“Exploring and considering simply won’t cut it when the challenges facing our economy and public services are so huge.”

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer launched his party’s manifesto with a commitment to “review” devolving youth justice and probation powers, despite Welsh Labour wanting to take responsibility for these areas of criminal justice.

The Labour election plan also included a commitment to restore decision-making over former European Union structural funds to the Welsh government.

The manifesto pledged major rail reform, but without a commitment to give £4 billion owed from the England-only HS2 high-speed rail project to the Welsh government.

Welsh Labour Leader Vaughan Gething said: “For 14 long years, we've been swimming against the Tory tide, with a government in Westminster that disrespects devolution.

“With Jo Stevens as our Secretary of State for Wales, and Keir Starmer in Number 10, I’m confident of Wales’s place in a changed Britain.”

Labour shadow secretary of state for Wales Jo Stevens said: “Our manifesto will guarantee a stronger Wales in a changed Britain.”

Ms Saville Roberts was pleased the two parties published their manifestos on the same day, saying: “Putting both side by side, the gulf could hardly be greater when it comes to fighting for Wales’s best interests.”
