Wales will be ‘voiceless in Westminster’ without Plaid Cymru MPs, party leader says

WALES will be voiceless in Westminster without Plaid Cymru MPs, party leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has warned.

Mr ap Iorwerth said that voters know the Conservatives are finished, but with the expectation of Labour taking power on Friday, there is a “real risk that they will simply take Wales for granted.”

He criticised Labour and the Tories in Wales for putting the Westminster whip before the interests of Welsh communities.

Mr ap Iorwerth said that the London parties’ views on fair funding, HS2 consequentials, the two-child benefit cap, and powers over justice and policing throughout the General Election campaign have “exposed their true priorities.”

He said: “With only days to go until voters across the UK go to the polls, it is clearer than ever that Wales will be voiceless in Westminster without a strong cohort of Plaid Cymru members of Parliament.

“When people vote on Thursday, they expect their MP to speak up for them and their community, not to follow the Westminster whip at any cost.

“We know that the Tories are finished, and the contempt they show Wales is nothing new — but with Labour set to enter Downing Street on Friday, there is a real danger that they will simply take Wales for granted.”

The party has pledged to hold a Labour government to account for its “empty slogans.”

Plaid Westminster leader Liz Saville Roberts said: “People crave better governance, so it’s no wonder that a simple ‘change’ message appeals. But ‘change’ is nothing but an empty slogan without evidence to back it up.

“A lack of ambition, continued underfunding of Welsh services and a stranglehold on key economic levers mean little will change for Wales under Labour unless we elect strong voices to hold them to account.”
