THE Greens would push a potential Labour government to be “braver and bolder” if elected, the party’s co-leader said today while canvassing in Bristol.
Carla Denyer is battling Labour MP Thangam Debbonaire to secure a seat in the new and more concentrated Bristol Central constituency.
Ms Debbonaire has been elected thrice for Bristol West, which no longer exists due to boundary changes.
But according to the latest poll by YouGov, the shadow culture secretary is set to lose to Ms Denyer, who is projected to win 52 per cent of the vote.
If Ms Denyer wins and the Greens retain their seat in Brighton Pavilion as predicted, the party will secure two seats in Parliament — a historic first.
As the race intensifies, Ms Debbonaire has said she is “very concerned” about missing postal votes, according to an email to a constituent abroad seen by Sky News.
YouGov polled 47,751 adults across Britain between June 19 and July 2 before making the forecast.
It suggested that the Labour Party is on course for a 431-seat landslide, while the Conservatives could win just 102 seats.
Ms Denyer described the race in her constituency as “looking like it’s going to be really close.”
She said that voters need to decide if they want a government with a huge Labour majority “writing them a blank cheque to continue U-turning on policies” or one with a “handful of Green MPs there to hold them to account and push them to be a bit braver and bolder.”
The party secured significant victory in May’s local elections, when it won seats for 812 councillors, more than tripling its 2019 count.
