THOUSANDS of Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists will occupy Windsor Great Park for three days this summer, the climate protest group announced today.
XR has invited King Charles to the Upgade Democracy protest from August 30 to September 1, noting his history of environmentalism.
The event in the park, which is adjacent to the grounds of Windsor Castle, the monarch’s home in Berkshire, will include a so-called f*UNFAIR and a mass community assembly, as well as outreach, art-blocking, workshops, music and speakers.
Its aim is to put pressure on the government to create a citizens’ assembly on climate and ecological justice and to take its lead on the environment from the assembly’s decisions.
Catherine Bartlett of XR UK said Windsor Castle had been chosen as an “embodiment of a broken and unjust system,” adding that the general election had “neither fixed our broken system nor addressed the urgent action needed to tackle the climate and nature emergency.”
XR said it had informed the King of its plans on June 13.
Buckingham Palace was contacted for comment.
