FRANCE: Two men and two women from the Paris region were taken into custody this morning in connection with last month’s jewel heist at the Louvre museum, according to the Paris public prosecutor.

The loot, valued at around $102 million (£78m), hasn’t been recovered. It includes a diamond-and-emerald necklace that Napoleon gave to Empress Marie-Louise, jewels tied to 19th century queens Marie-Amelie and Hortense and Empress Eugenie’s pearl-and-diamond tiara.

POLAND: The European Union’s highest court ordered Poland today to recognise same-sex marriages registered in other EU countries even if Polish law does not permit them.

EU member states must recognise a marriage between two EU citizens of the same sex that has been lawfully concluded in another EU state, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled.

MYANMAR: Human rights groups have condemned the Trump administration’s decision to end protected status for Myanmar citizens due to the country’s “notable progress in governance and stability,” even though it remains mired in a bloody civil war and the head of its military regime faces possible UN war crimes charges.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem cited the military’s plans for “free and fair election” in December among the reasons for the decision announced today.

YEMEN: Gunmen have fired on a provincial leader’s motorcade, killing at least five security officers and wounding two others.

According to provincial spokesman Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, today’s attack targeted Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan on a road linking the province to the rest of the country. Mr Rahman added that two assailants had been in the gun battle that followed.

No group immediately claimed responsibility.
