UGANDA: Two Kenyan activists were released from detention today after President Yoweri Museveni confirmed that they had been arrested more than a month ago and accused them of working with the opposition to unseat him in the January general election.
Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo were taken by armed men on October 1, shortly after attending a rally by Bobi Wine, Mr Museveni’s most prominent challenger.
MALAYSIA: Rescuers recovered the bodies of seven migrants from Myanmar and found 13 alive after a boat capsized with dozens on board, officials said today.
The vessel had left the town of Buthidaung, in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, carrying some 300 people, said First Admiral Romli Mustafa from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, citing a preliminary investigation.
SPAIN: Strong waves killed three people in the Canary Islands by pulling them into the Atlantic Ocean during a tidal surge, officials said today.
Another 15 were injured in four different incidents along the coast of Tenerife on Saturday, according to emergency services.
Two died and several others were injured after strong waves pulled them into the ocean in La Guancha, Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, emergency services said. A third person was found dead floating in the ocean off Granadilla.
FRANCE: A Paris court in Paris will decide on Monday whether to release former president Nicolas Sarkozy, just 20 days after he was sent to prison.
Mr Sarkozy was sentenced to five years behind bars after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a scheme to finance his winning 2007 campaign with money from Libya.
