ITALY: Five German mountaineers have died after being hit by an avalanche in South Tyrol, northern Italy, rescuers said on Sunday.

The bodies of three victims — two men and a woman — were recovered on Saturday, while the other missing people, a man and his teenage daughter, were found on Sunday morning.

The mountaineers were caught in the natural event while climbing near the Cima Vertana, in the Ortles mountains, at an altitude of more than 11,500 feet. 

KENYA: At least 21 people have died and 30 others are missing after a landslide on Saturday in Kenya’s western Rift Valley region. Heavy rains have battered the area for days during the country’s ongoing short rains season.

More than 1,000 homes were destroyed by the mudslides in Chesongoch in Elgeyo Marakwet County, in western Kenya.

Rescue efforts have continued despite the heavy rains.

SERBIA: Tens of thousands of people turned out in Novi Sad on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of railway station disaster which killed 16 people. 

A concrete canopy collapsed in the northern city’s train station last November 1, triggering nationwide protests accusing authorities of rampant corruption and nepotism in state infrastructure projects.

MEXICO: A fire and explosion at a convenience store in Hermosillo, in the north-western state of Sonora, on Saturday killed at least 23 people, including children and injured 12 others, state authorities said.

Sonora Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chavez said preliminary investigations showed the deaths were caused by “inhalation of toxic gases.”
