Political chaos in France looks set to continue
Reappointed French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu looks on as he visits a police station in L'Hay-les-Roses, outside Paris, October 11, 2025

FRANCE’S newly reappointed Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu named a new government on Sunday as he faces pressure to produce a budget and quell political turmoil that is scaring businesses and investors and staining the country’s image.

The Cabinet includes several familiar faces from previous governments who hail from French President Emmanuel Macron’s right-wing camp, as well as other allied rightwingers and some people from outside the political sphere.

The political chaos in France looks set to continue as the left and right within parliament vow to bring down the government again.

France Unbowed leader Mathilde Panotsaid: “We just filed a motion of no-confidence that will bring down Lecornu’s new government.

She said: “Lecornu will fall and Macron will follow.”

National Rally president Jordan Bardella said: “It is in the country’s interest to ensure that Emmanuel Macron is stopped in his tracks. We will therefore vote for no-confidence motions coming from other political parties.”

Immediately after the new Cabinet was announced, the right-wing The Republicans party announced that it was expelling the six party members who agreed to join the government.

The new cabinet must present a 2026 draft budget before a Tuesday deadline, giving parliament the constitutionally required 70 days to scrutinise the plan before the end of the year.
