SOMALIA: At least three people were killed when a military helicopter serving the African Union peacekeeping mission crashed today at the airport in the capital Mogadishu, according to the Somali authorities.

The helicopter was arriving from Balli-doogle airfield in the Lower Shabelle region with eight people on board. Investigations are under way to determine the cause of the crash.

TOGO: At least three people died during protests the capital Lome on June 26, 27 and 28, Amnesty International said on Tuesday, as leader Faure Gnassingbe faces increasing pressure over changes to the constitution that could keep him in power indefinitely.

The three bodies were reportedly found in a lagoon in Lome’s Be neighbourhood, where violent clashes broke out between protesters and security forces last week.

CHINA: A United States judge has ruled that China’s Huawei Technologies, a leading telecoms equipment company, must face criminal charges in a wide-reaching case alleging that it stole technology and engaged in racketeering, wire and bank fraud and other crimes.

US District Judge Ann Donnelly on Tuesday rejected Huawei’s request to dismiss the allegations against the company, saying in a 52-page ruling that its arguments were premature.

CLIMATE: A relentless European heatwave helped fuel a deadly wildfire in Spain today, while the European Union presented new plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The blaze that broke out on Tuesday night created an enormous thick plume of ash and smoke that reached 45,000 feet of altitude.
