A general view of the Sizewell nuclear power plant in Suffolk

CHANCELLOR Rachel Reeves is due to announce a £14.2 billion investment to build Sizewell C nuclear plant in Suffolk at GMB’s annual congress today.

GMB London regional secretary Warren Kenny hailed the ”momentous announcement” as ”absolutely vital” for Britain's energy security and Net Zero plans.

The government says that the investment will create 10,000 jobs.

Ministers are also set to confirm one of Europe’s first small modular reactor (SMR) programmes.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said that Britain needs ”new nuclear to deliver a golden age of clean energy abundance.”

Ms Reeves will set out government departmental spending plans in her spending review tomorrow.

She said: ”Today we are once again investing in Britain’s renewal, with the biggest nuclear building programme in a generation.”

Prospect general secretary Mike Clancy hailed the funding as a ”vital step forward.”

About 300 protesters rallied against the plans for Sizewell C on the beach near Sizewell B on Saturday.
