THE TORIES disowned Liz Truss’s disastrous mini-Budget today, prompting Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister hit back with the claim that “nothing will change” if the shadow cabinet takes power.
Shadow chancellor Mel Stride said it would “take time … and contrition” to undo the damage to the party’s credibility caused by her “mistakes.”
He said: “Never again will the Conservative Party undermine fiscal credibility by making promises we cannot afford.”
The former prime minister, who has become increasingly extreme since being voted out of Parliament, responded by writing on social media: “Britain’s system of government is broken.
“Nothing will change with people like him in charge.”
Ms Truss was elected Tory leader and became PM in September 2022 with the backing of 57 per cent Tory Party members.
A Labour Party spokesman said that Mr Stride’s speech had failed to apologise for the mini-Budget, adding: “The Tories inflicted mortgage misery and sky-high bills on working people.
“Their weasel words can’t change that fact and their unfunded plans show they will do it all over again.”
