Brazil's Supreme Court rejects Bolsonaro appeals over coup involvement case

BRAZIL’S Supreme Court rejected appeals filed by former President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday.

Mr Bolsonaro was attempting to remove two of the judges who will examine his complaint over allegations of involvement in an attempted coup.

Mr Bolsonaro’s defence team attempted to remove Flavio Dino, President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva’s former justice minister, and Cristiano Zanin, the president’s former personal lawyer, over alleged impartiality.

The lawyers also argued that both Mr Dino and Mr Zanin had previously filed complaints against the former president, and that some of these proceedings are still ongoing.

The Supreme Court rejected another appeal by Walter Braga Netto, Mr Bolsonaro’s former defence minister and his 2022 vice-presidential candidate, seeking to recuse Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the coup case.

According to Mr Braga Netto’s lawyers, Judge De Moraes should not be involved in the trial because, according to the Attorney General’s Office’s complaint, he was the target of a murder plot as part of the coup.

But the Supreme Court said the appeal had been submitted outside the established deadline and that the reasons put forward by the defence were insufficient to support the challenge.

The Prosecutor’s Office filed a complaint in February accusing Mr Bolsonaro and 33 other suspects of trying to invalidate the results of the 2022 election won by Lula.
