University fees could soar to £16,000 a year
Tory plans to scrap the cap on tuition fees could double the amount of debt dumped on graduates

Tory plans to scrap the cap on tuition fees could double the amount of debt dumped on graduates, a leading education adviser warned yesterday.

Aaron Porter predicted that Britain's 24 Russell Group universities could charge £16,000 a year if the Tories turn higher education into a free-for-all.

The former National Union of Students president warned that such a step would cause other universities to rush to impose higher fees.
