Players’ chief calls for gambling addiction to be treated as a health problem

GAMBLING addiction among professional sportspeople should be regarded as a mental health issue, Professional Players Federation chief executive Simon Taylor urged yesterday.

Taylor said that research showed that elite male athletes are three times more likely to develop a gambling problem than the rest of the population.

There is no firm evidence yet that the problem is prevalent among female athletes, although Taylor admits the risk is similar.
