Print workers down tools over two-year pay freeze

SUFFOLK print workers in dispute over low pay will be stopping the presses for a third time on January 17, the Unite union announced yesterday.

The workers at CPI William Clowes in Beccles previously walked out in November and December, after 75 Unite members refused to accept a two-year pay freeze which was handed down by bosses last April.

The workforce has experienced only two pay rises in the last 14 years, which printworkers have called “shameful.” Union reps say management have been “adamantly” refusing to discuss pay with the union.

Unite regional officer Mark Walker said: “The management at CPI William Clowes need to recognise the continual hard work that our loyal members put in year in, year out.

“If this antediluvian attitude to modern employment relations continues, more industrial action will definitely be on the cards.”
