York Valkyrie's players celebrate with the trophy after winning the Women's Super League Grand Final at the Langtree Park, Saint Helens, October 6, 2024

MEN’S BASKETBALL: London Lions continued their miserable start to the season with a crushing 66-89 home loss to Leicester that effectively knocks them out of the Super League Trophy at the first stage.

Newcastle kept up their perfect start to the season with a 93-88 win over Caledonia, who hit back to edge out Manchester 87-91, Bristol beat Surrey 86-79 and Sheffield held on for a narrow 102-100 victory at the Cheshire Phoenix.

WOMEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Tries from Lacey Owen, Eboni Partington and Kelsey Gentles helped York Valkyrie come from 8-6 down at half time to beat St Helens 18-8 and become the first team to retain the Super League Grand Final title.

St Helens had already won the Challenge Cup and League Leaders shield after finishing four points clear of runners-up Leeds and York and only lost twice all season, both times to the Valkyrie.

SPEEDWAY: Glasgow Tigers rider Ace Pipjer won the British under-19s championships on countback from Scunthorpe’s Luke Harrison in Sunday’s rain affected finals at Oxford.

Jody Scott finished third with Lewis Killeen fourth as the meeting was abandoned after heat 16 when William Cairns and Killeen collided heavily.

Cairns was hospitalised after suffering a broken nose, bruising to his lungs and concussion.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Champions League group stage action kicks off on Tuesday evening with eight-time winners Lyon facing tournament debutants Galatasary and Roma hosting 2023’s runners-up Wolfsburg in Group A.

Celtic welcome Twente Enschede to the New Douglas Park in Hamilton for their Group B game and Chelsea are up against Real Madrid, who include ex-Blues striker Melanie Leupolz in their squad, for the third year running.
