Children being let down ‘by every measure’ as watchdog warns young offender institutions getting worse
A general view of a prison

FAILURES in children’s prisons are widespread and worsening, according to a damning watchdog report published today.

One in eight children has complained of feeling unsafe — a more than two-fold increase on the previous year, according to HM Inspectorate of Prisons.

Its annual survey of children living in young offender institutions and secure training centres across England and Wales also found that fewer children were receiving education.

Youth and sentencing minister Sir Nic Dakin said: “These reports are shocking and highlight the unacceptable strain that has been placed on the youth estate for far too long.

“This government is determined to tackle these challenges head on – giving staff the tools they need to reduce violence, increase access to vital rehabilitation and education, and help children turn away from crime for good.”
